Music can have an enormous positive impact on those living with dementia. Like nothing else music has the ability to spark amazing memories and take a person to a different time and place in their lives.
If you would like to create a personalised playlist for someone living with dementia here is our guide to getting started.
Choose familiar music
People with dementia often respond well to music from their past, such as songs from their youth or classic hits. Familiar music can trigger memories and emotions, which can create a sense of comfort and familiarity.
Consider songs associated with significant moments
You can include songs associated with achievements, special occasions, or other memorable moments. Think about when the person first met their partner, what were they listening to? Music they may have heard at weddings or other family celebrations and even music associated with their children.
Listen to the playlist with your loved one
Share the moment with them and pay attention to their reactions to each song, and remove any songs that seem to make them agitated or unhappy. You can also add more songs by certain artists that they react well to.
Choose a source of music without commercials
Commercials can be confusing for someone living with dementia. So, if you are creating a playlist for someone using the likes of Spotify, ensure that you have gone commercial-free.
Encourage movement
You can try choosing songs with a familiar rhythm and encouraging your loved one to move to the beat. Dancing can help promote physical activity, coordination, and social interaction, and can also reduce anxiety and improve well-being.
